Later this year, the Western Australian Space Science Education Centre (WASSEC) will open its doors as a state-of-the-art resource for students, educators, and the broader community.

This innovative facility, funded by the State Government, aims to make space accessible, inviting young people to consider space-related and STEM careers while highlighting the range of supporting roles involved in space exploration from educators to cleaners!

Located at Joseph Banks Secondary College, WASSEC also actively partners with institutions such as North Metro TAFE and Edith Cowan University (ECU) to promote a hands-on approach to learning and innovation. The centre’s mission is not only to prepare students for scientific and technological fields but also to cultivate essential soft skills like leadership, communication, and teamwork. By working with students from diverse backgrounds, WASSEC fosters inclusivity, encouraging students to grow in both technical and interpersonal skills crucial to success in any career.

Interactive, hands-on experiences at WASSEC include the latest in cybersecurity and robotics, giving students the opportunity to immerse themselves in complex technical fields. The facility’s cybersecurity rooms provide a purpose-built environment where students can learn about critical digital safety measures—essential in today’s interconnected world and even more vital as space exploration grows increasingly digital. Robotics labs introduce students to programming and automation, opening doors to exciting career paths in automation and mechatronics, critical elements of space and other high-tech industries.

Among the many exciting features at WASSEC is a Mars-themed experience, which remains under wraps but promises to be an engaging simulation aimed at giving students a taste of future Mars exploration. This aspect underscores WASSEC’s dedication to providing students with an authentic feel of the space experience, bridging the gap between imagination and reality.

In addition to its high-tech labs, WASSEC features integrated learning rooms designed to encourage collaboration and innovation, especially for group projects and interactive workshops. These spaces are ideal for fostering teamwork and communication skills, which are indispensable in scientific fields where interdisciplinary collaboration is the norm.

Roger Cooke, Premier of Western Australia, will officiate the centre’s launch later this year, marking a significant step for STEM education in the state. By blending technology with soft skill development, WASSEC aims to equip the next generation with a well-rounded skill set that prepares them not only for careers in STEM but for any field they choose.

BECOME A PARTNER

To support the ongoing resourcing of the Western Australian Space Science Education Centre and the development of future focused STEM learning opportunities for 10,000 students in Western Australia each year, Joseph Banks Secondary College has established donation and sponsorship pathways, including the establishment of a DGR.
