More Than a Seat at the Table - Why Joining the WBA Board Matters

By AndyK Design

Nominations are now open for the Wanneroo Business Association Board, and this year we want to encourage more members to seriously consider putting their hand up.

Not because it looks good on paper. Not because it is the polite thing to do. And not just because every organisation needs volunteers.

Because being part of the WBA Board is a chance to be in the room where things happen.

It is where ideas turn into action. It is where conversations become real initiatives. It is where the direction of the Association is shaped by the people willing to step in, contribute, and help make things happen.

We are looking for members who want to be involved in a real way. People with ideas, yes, but also people with the drive to back those ideas up. The people who do not sit around waiting to be asked. The people who see an opportunity to contribute and choose to lean in.

You Do Not Need To Be A “Board Person”

One of the biggest myths around board roles is that you need to have done it before, know everything, or be the loudest person in the room.

You do not.

You do not need prior board experience. You do not need to be political. You do not need to have all the answers. You do not need to be the most outspoken person at the table.

What you do need is a genuine interest in business in our community, and the willingness to show up, get involved, and follow through.

The WBA Board works because it is made up of a mix of personalities, experience, skills and ideas. That variety matters. It keeps conversations grounded, practical and productive. What matters most is not whether everyone comes in with the same background. What matters is that the people around the table are proactive, hands-on, and willing to contribute.

Why It Matters, For WBA And For You

Let’s be honest, this is about more than “giving back.” That is the line everyone uses, and while it is part of it, it is not the whole story.

Joining the Board gives you the chance to build deeper connections, grow as a leader, and be part of the conversations that help shape what WBA does next. It puts you in the room with other engaged business people, gives you a stronger voice in the direction of the Association, and creates opportunities to be seen as someone who is involved, invested and trusted.

That matters.

It matters for your own growth. It matters for your network. And yes, it matters for your business too.

When people see you showing up, contributing and following through, they notice. They get to know you. They understand what you stand for. Trust builds. Visibility grows. And in business, that kind of credibility has real value.

What The Commitment Really Looks Like

A lot of people hesitate because they assume the time commitment will be too much.

In reality, it depends a lot on what you want to put into the role. Board members are expected to contribute at least around an hour a week, but that can look different depending on where you are involved. It might mean attending events, representing WBA, joining discussions, being active on a committee, or taking part in a meeting every couple of months.

The more you put in, the more you tend to get back, in experience, visibility, relationships and impact.

Some current board members will be re-nominating, which is important for continuity, but there are also positions open. That means there is room for fresh energy, fresh perspectives, and people who are ready to step forward and be part of a strong, proactive team.

We Need Doers

Ideas are great. We need those.

But what we really need are doers.

People who turn up. People who follow through. People who care enough to be part of the effort, not just the conversation around it.

So if you have been watching from the sidelines, thinking maybe one day, this is the time to take a proper look at what being on the Board could mean, not only for WBA, but for your own growth, profile and connections as well.

And if you are going to nominate, remember this, members vote for the people they see and the people they know. So get out there. Come to events. Meet members. Be part of the community you want to help lead.

Nominations Are Open

Nominations are now open, and we encourage members who are passionate about business in our community to put their hand up.

You do not need to know everything. You do not need to have done this before. You just need the willingness to be involved, contribute, and follow through.

If that sounds like you, now is the time to take the next step.

You can download the nomination form and view the full details, including available positions, role information, requirements and key dates, on our Board Nominations page.
